This year, the National Construction Code (NCC) implemented a set of changes to housing construction standards, aimed at improving the sustainability & accessibility of Australian houses.
Effective May 1, 2024, these updates address both design and construction regulations, focusing on livable housing, energy efficiency, and condensation management.
Most notably is all new builds must have a 7 Star energy rating, and wider doorways, of 1000mm minimum.

Improved Accessibility
Australia has an ageing population. The number of people aged 85 & over is predicted to rise from 0.4mil to 1.8mil by 2050.
The NCC 2024 emphasises making homes more accessible for all Australians, including those with disabilities. This involves design features that ensure homes can accommodate a breadth of needs of occupants, over their lifetimes.
Given that the typical lifespan of a house in Australia is 50-60 years, homes built today must be built with consideration for our future generations.
For instance, homes will now include:
-
Wider doorways and hallways for easier movement.
-
Step-free entries to enhance accessibility.
-
Reinforced bathroom walls to support the installation of grab rails in the future.
These changes aim to create a more inclusive living environment that can adapt to the diverse needs of its residents.
