Creating the ultimate study nook

  • Article by: @ Henley

A study nook might be small in size, but it packs a punch in functionality stakes.

While the traditional study or home office has been a staple in homes over the last two decades, the study nook is steadily growing in popularity.  The beauty of the study nook is that it warrants much less space and can be created in any nook (literally) in the house.

When it comes to study nooks, Henley has identified these changing needs and has created several creative options for customers to choose from.  Henley’s Colour Design Consultant, Brigitte Gantonas, shares the latest tips and trends around all things study nooks.

The must-haves for functionality

A study nook usually boasts an all-important power point, some storage areas, and with the set up in standing or seating mode.  When you set up a study nook, consider an integrated bench top and a floating shelf as a must-have for any study nook.

Brigitte says, “Good lighting should be a top priority. It doesn’t need to be in the form of a lamp, lighting can be discreetly concealed in overhead cupboards or shelving too, which creates a stunning contemporary, seamless look.”

“A comfortable chair is also a must.  And your chair should not be the borrowed dining chair but a chair which is ergonomically sound and looks great in the space.  Consider a grey, heavy textured swivel chair.

The last thing you want when you’re sitting writing those late-night emails is to be uncomfortable! Go for something beautifully upholstered that you love to sink into that is also good for your back! Stools are a popular choice too, as they can be more discreet and are able to be tucked away under the desk when not in use.”

Nook locations

As study nooks are informal areas, they are also a super way to save space and are usually set up closer to busier areas of the family home.

“Study nooks can be found in kitchens, in the living room or even under the stairs in the entrance – as long as desk can be installed or fitted in.  The great thing about study nooks is that they can be used by every member of the household, depending on demand,” Brigitte says.

“Study nooks are often found near high traffic areas of the home so they can be easily accessed and used by all family members.  From finishing off the last-minute school assignment, paying bills to creating the next big novel, the study nook, whilst tucked away, can be the foundation of explosion of ideas and tasks.”

“If you’re lucky enough, near a window where you get the luxury of having some beautiful natural light pouring in, to make work not feel like work!”

Comfortable home office that makes you smile

A study nook, despite its size, does not have to look boring or plain.  Your study nook can still ooze personality and charm.  By handpicking the perfect colours, textures and lighting is a great start.

Injecting some colour and flair into the space through the use of timber, wallpaper, artwork or a piece of furniture like a feature lamp.  Consider a touch of greenery and some stylish stationery to dress your desk.

Biggest mistakes to avoid

“Try and avoid adding too many unnecessary items to the area making the small space appear cluttered. Often the study nook is on display and isn’t able to be “hidden away” so it needs to be kept clean and clear of clutter for it to work in the home,” Brigitte adds.

“Making sure it is set up in an area where you have a sufficient amount of power outlets so you can use the space to its best ability by having laptops, screens or WIFI available.

“Study nooks are definitely becoming more popular whether you have an apartment or a bigger home as they act as a bit of a feature now and can be seamlessly incorporated into any area of the home.”
